Take It to the Bank

Foundation: Monterey Peninsula Foundation

It's that time of year again: the time of year when people around the country open their wallets to help those in need.

And in California, where the second-oldest food bank was founded in 1967 and the second-oldest is still going strong after more than 50 years, there's a real need, reports NBC Bay Area.

The state has some of the highest obesity rates in the nation, and the number of people living in extreme poverty has more than doubled in the past decade, according to the food bank's most recent annual report.

In San Benito and Santa Cruz counties, the number of people living in extreme poverty has more than doubled in the past three years, and more than half of them are food insecure, meaning they don't have enough money to buy food and other necessities, reports California Local.

The food bank in Santa Cruz, which is part of a national network of 13 such food banks, says it needs donations of food and money to keep up with demand over the holidays.
